Engineering is a Great Profession

'Scientists investigate that which already is; Engineers create that which has never been' - Albert Einstein

'Engineering is a great profession. There is the satisfaction of watching a figment of the imagination emerge through the aid of science to a plan on paper. Then it moves to realisation in stone or metal or energy.  Then it brings homes to men and women. Then it elevates the standard of living and adds to the comforts of life. This is the engineer’s high privilege' - Herbert Hover

Engineering is a great profession because...

Engineering is everywhere!

An average starting salary for a graduate engineer is £20,000.

We need more engineers - the IET survey in July 2007 said that 52% of the 500 engineering companies polled expected to have difficulty recruiting engineers over the next 12 months.

An engineering degree can open doors not just to careers in engineering but to other careers.  Many engineering graduates move into careers in medicine, law, teaching and business.

An engineering degree gets you to the top – 14 of the top FTSE 100 companies business executives have a degree in engineering.

As an engineer you can either work close to home or travel the world.

Women in engineering

Three quarters of women are still found in just 5 occupational groups:

  • Associate-professional and technical (nurse or beautician)
  • Administration and secretarial work
  • Caring for children or older people
  • Sales and customer service (shop work)
  • Non-skilled manual work (cleaning)

... in engineering women can earn more...

  • Childcare £9,900
  • Administration £13,000
  • Nursing £19,000
  • Engineering £21,000

The UK engineering sector needs people from all walks of life to truly reflect the diverse mix of people in the UK and produce the products, services and environments for all...engineering is not just everywhere, it's for everyone!
