Young Engineers

About the Organisation
Young Engineers is a charitable organisation that aims to stimulate interest, appreciation and engagement in the practical application of engineering by young people in primary and secondary education. It enables volunteer teachers and their supporters to provide exciting, challenging and creative activities that enrich the STEM curriculum whilst recognising the constraints of available resources.
Part of the Royal Academy’s Best Programme, Young Engineer’s offers a whole range of activities, challenges, competitions and services, including:
- A National network of Young Engineer Clubs
- A variety of interesting, exciting and appropriate engineering based competitions and challenges
- A modern Website with an ever expanding activity bank
- Guidance, discounts and recognition
- The regional and national Young Engineer for Britain
- The annual K’Nex Challenge in Primary Schools (formerly Junior Engineer for Britain)
- The UK’s largest celebration of engineering achievement for schools – the Young Engineers
- Annual Celebration of Engineering
- UK’s major input to the International Science and Engineering Fair (normally held in the USA)
Wholly supported by sponsorship and charitable donations from UK business, Young Engineers promotes creativity and innovation in our students and helps to ensure that we continue to produce world beating engineers!
LEP involvement
Young Engineers has considerable experience in supporting curriculum enriching Young Engineers clubs and is delighted to be a founding partner in the London Engineering Project. As part of the LEP, Young Engineers through the direct support of field workers on site in the in London and via its national network of clubs will offer a wide variety of activities for club members. These will include:
Primary Schools
- Introduction to engineering session.
- pupils who wish to participate in any of the national or local engineering challenges.
- A visit to a local engineering company/site visit for Yr 6 pupils.
Secondary Schools
In addition to the above, YE staff will seek to:
- Support the running of regular YE ‘twilight’ session in all participating schools.
- Encourage members to participate in a wide variety of engineering challenges.
- Identify and publicise suitable local community based engineering projects that members might usefully be involved in.
- Provide opportunities for pupils to discuss the challenges, benefits and rewards of a career in engineering.
- Assist in Yr 10 work experience placements for those with a particular interest in engineering.
- Arrange suitable visits to local engineering companies and other engineering areas of interest.
- Organise an annual engineering ‘fair’ where all members will have the opportunity to display their activities and achievements.
