The Smallpeice Trust
About the Organisation
The Smallpeice Trust is an independent educational charity that provides a highly respected and professionally executed programme to promote engineering as a career to young people.
Every year around 3000 secondary school students attend one of our activities. We provide two main types of activities:
- four-day, heavily subsidised residential courses at Universities throughout the UK for year 9, 10, 11, 12 students;
- one-day science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) taster days for year 8 or 9 students at their school. Core courses are affiliated to the Royal Academy of Engineering Best programme.
In all our activities, we inspire students and encourage them to create, apply and share engineering-related ideas and skills between themselves. We seek to develop student’s self-confidence and encourage them to learn new skills from practical application of engineering to team-working, problem solving and creative thinking.
We recognise the importance of helping young people to prepare for working life and work in partnership with industry, education, government and professional bodies to ensure that our students get close to the latest events which impact Engineering. By having real exposure to companies, and by solving real-life problems, students gain an understanding of what engineering is like in the outside world. The Smallpeice Trust partners currently include Arup, BAE Systems, BOC, Corus, Devonport Management Limited, GCHQ, Home Office, Jacobs Babtie, KBR, Lloyds Register, Nexia Solutions, QinetiQ, Rolls-Royce Aerospace, Thames Water, The Royal Air Force, The Royal Engineers, The Royal Navy, United Utilities and the list is ever expanding.
LEP involvement
We recognise the diversity of skills required in engineering and reach out to students of all different backgrounds. We believe that many students have the potential to make a meaningful contribution into engineering and wealth creation – but not everyone has the opportunity or motivation. We recognise the need for engineers across all industries and partner with companies of varying size and industry to give students the opportunity to explore all areas of engineering.
The Smallpeice Trust will bring this experience to the London Engineering Project by delivering both one-day STEM enrichment activities in London Secondary schools and through the delivery of four-day residential courses for students who have a keen interest in engineering.
