About the Organisation

London is the economic and political heart of the United Kingdom and it is also at the centre of EDF Energy’s network operations. Keeping the wheels of commerce and government turning would be much harder without electricity to power up the computers and switchboards through which the important decisions that affect our daily lives are communicated.

EDF Energy Networks distribute electricity across the 600 square miles of Greater London, delivering light and power to over three million homes in the region. Our work is as vital to the safety and comfort of London’s eight million inhabitants as it is to the 400,000 businesses operating within the M25.

We sometimes take our power supply for granted but imagine the inconvenience of life without TV or radio, PCs or laptops, washing machines and microwave ovens …or any means of recharging our mobile phones and MP3 players! More seriously, imagine the chaos our capital city would experience without fully functioning hospitals, schools or traffic signals.

Maintaining and building the power networks is a 24/7 operation and it requires talented and skilled people to design, plan, fit and service the 30,000 km of cable that twists its way beneath the streets of London. Many of those people are engineers, technicians and specialists with the training and qualifications required to keep London’s bright lights shining.

EDF Energy believes that it is important to recruit and employ local people who are familiar with London – familiar with its geography; its landmarks; its communities; its busy, non-stop activity; its traffic, hustle-bustle and noise.

Our aspiration is for our workforce to be as diverse as the communities it serves and, for this reason, we are keen to attract local students on to the Foundation Degree in Power distribution – offered by London South Bank University – that we are proud to sponsor.

LEP involvement

London needs engineers and technicians to tackle the many and varied challenges facing the Capital in the years to come – challenges of which EDF Energy is very aware. The London Engineering Project (LEP) is taking steps to ensure that London has plenty of engineers trained, qualified and ready to face those challenges head-on and we are very happy to be a partner in this excellent initiative. We believe that the programmes and initiatives put in place by the LEP are making excellent steps towards developing a pipeline of engineers that will continue to supply the Capital for many years in the future.
