Cambridge-MIT Institute
About the Organisation
The Cambridge-MIT Institute (CMI) is one of the partner institutions taking part in an ambitious new initiative to encourage more students from a broad range of backgrounds to study engineering at colleges and universities.
CMI is taking part in one strand of the project to develop 'more attractive, enhanced teaching of the existing engineering degree curriculum'. CMI was established in July 2000 to enable collaboration between Cambridge and MIT. CMI funded linked programmes of Education and Research designed to improve the two way flow of people and ideas between the academic world and society to their mutual benefit. In January 2007, CMI became the Cambridge MIT Partnership programme.
A key emphasis within the educational work has been on “Education for Innovation” where there is a balance between theory and practice, and students use their knowledge for authentic engineering activities which deliver effective real world solutions. This approach makes engineering a more attractive proposition for a wide variety of students. It also leads to a focus on an education which develops within students conceptual depth, interpersonal skills, and individual character.
CMI has worked with the London Engineering Programme as one way of delivering the benefit and experience which has flown from its educational investments. This has included novel course materials, educational technologies as well as programmes of evaluation and assessment.
