About the Organisation

TfL was created in 2000 as the integrated body responsible for the Capital's transport system, with Bob Kiley appointed as London's first Commissioner of Transport. Peter Hendy is the current commissioner.

The main role of TfL, which is part of the Greater London Authority, is to put the Mayor of London's Transport Strategy into action and manage the Capital's transport services.

TfL manage and are responsible for:

  • London's buses
  • The Underground
  • Docklands Light Railway (DLR)
  • London Overground
  • Tramlink
  • Managing London River Services
  • Running Victoria Coach Station
  • Running the London Transport Museum
  • 580km of main roads and all of London's traffic lights
  • Managing the Congestion Charging scheme
  • Regulating the city's taxis and private hire trade
  • Promoting a range of walking and cycling initiatives
  • Making London's transport more accessible through coordinating schemes for people with impaired mobility and running Dial-a-Ride alongside the London boroughs' Taxicard scheme

LEP Involvement

The LEP works in partnership with TfL and has developed a pilot engineering event in partnership with the Transport Museum.

The pilot event, nicknamed TfL 500, aims to introduce students to the type of engineering involved in their London transport system and the challenges engineers who work for TfL face on today's transport system and the transport of the future.

TfL in partnership with the LEP and STEMNET's Science and Engineering Ambassador's Programme (SEA's) have successfully recruited and trained around 40 new ambassadors to the scheme.
