About the Organisation

Home Office Scientific Development Branch (HOSDB) aims to be the Home Office’s definitive source of advice on scientific and technical issues, to deliver innovative technical capabilities and to support our customers, ensuring scientific and technical solutions are effective on the ground.

LEP Involvement

For three years now, students who have never met before have been brought to a residential location to work in teams of five over a period of three days to manage a real engineering project set by the HOSDB staff.  The HOSDB staff act as role models and provide expertise for the students to refer to.  The project has focused on robotics and the engineering behind it.

Peter Le, 16, who attended this residential was clearly proud of his achievements: "We built a robotic vehicle with a mechanical crane which can pick up weights of up to five kilos, and has lights and a video camera.

I learnt a lot about how to connect electrical equipment together with wires and switches.  When I am older I would like to be an engineer, though I'm not sure yet whether to do electronics or mechanics."
