Report
Engineering Islam is an annual event hosted by the London Engineering Project (LEP). The event celebrates Islamic culture and aims to show young people the important contribution that Muslims made to society particularly in the field of science and engineering. The event was inspired by 1001 Inventions: Muslim Heritage in Our World, a book created by the 1001 Inventions organisation. This year pupils from schools in South and East London attended the event which was held at the Royal Academy of Engineering. The day opened with an introduction to the topic of engineering and science in Islam by Dr. Anne-Maria Brennan, a lecturer from the Department of Applied Science at LSBU who is also a member of 1001 Inventions. Pupils then went on to complete three hands-on activities which are inspired by engineering feats of the Islamic world.
Over lunch the pupils were treated to a viewing of a short film 1001 Inventions and the Library of Secrets, which was created for the 1001 Inventions global exhibition. A fun day was had by all, Darrell Pariag, Schools Liaison Officer for the LEP said, ‘It was great to see pupils coming together and learning about some of the amazing feats that have come out of the Islamic World. The pupils had a great time completing the activities – one student asked me if he could come back tomorrow!’
