Event details

This activity was designed to guide pupils to explore the world of engineering and to introduce them to the vocabulary of higher education through a series of curriculum enhancing in-school interventions and a visit to a university.

The characters in this activity which include Professor Georgia and ‘ Boing Boing’ (a bionic cat with fibre-optic fur), help engage pupils to explore different disciplines and areas of engineering by introducing fun facts and practical challenges for them.

During in-school visits, pupils are introduced to the accessibility of University, and the bearing the pursuit of further education has on later career and life, along with discussing ‘What is Engineering?’. They also get to meet with and ask questions to our various engineering ambassadors that would be on hand to help deliver this activity.

Spending a day at a University, pupils will be introduced to aspects of student life through a series of talks from existing engineering students plus a campus tour. Pupils will undertake the following practical challenges.

Tower construction – building a structural, stable tower out of simple materials

Marine Engineering – constructing tin foil boats to float under marble weights

Adventures with Boing Boing – workbook activites as well as construction of Boing Boing
