Report

Solar Car Challenge 2010

On June 12th 2010 pupils from across South and East London came together at London South Bank University to take part in the London Engineering Project’s (LEP) third annual Solar Car Challenge.Over the past couple of months the pupils have been working very hard to design and build solar powered cars with the support of LEP student ambassadors.

The project is supported by Aspire Aim Higher South East London, it has been designed to enhance the Design and Technology curriculum and pupils will be awarded a Bronze CREST Award from the British Science Association for their efforts.

Parents, teachers (and even the sun!) came out at the final to see the teams compete in the Solar Car Rally. The event also included food, entertainment in the form of a chemical magic show, and a prize giving ceremony. It was a fun day out for all, Alfie from Graveney School said, ‘I wouldn’t change anything about the day – it was brilliant! I especially enjoyed competing against the other schools!’

The LEP were very impressed with the standard of the teams, Darrell Pariag, Schools Liaison Officer for the Project said, ‘The technical ability of the students went well beyond our expectations. The competition was really tight and the teams produced some very fast times over the 104 foot-long track. We were also really pleased to see so many parents at the final; it’s nice to see them supporting the pupils – we are even planning to have a parent’s team next year!’

The LEP would like to thank everyone involved in the Solar Car Challenge especially the support staff, academics, technicians and student ambassadors from LSBU and all of the pupils and teachers who took part – we look forward to seeing you again in 2011!
