Young Engineers of the Year

Every year the Royal Academy of Engineering hosts the ‘Academy Awards’, a celebration of the best of British achievement in engineering. This year the event took place on 9 June and was held at the Imperial War Museum, the theme of the evening was Celebrating Innovators in Engineering. Guests were joined by HRH The Prince Phillip Duke of Edinburgh KG KT and Academy President LSTEM Ambassadors at Academy Awardsord Browne of Madingley.

This year was particularly exciting for the LEP as six of the LEP STEM Ambassadors were awarded the ‘Young Engineer of the Year’ prize in recognition of the volunteer work they have done for STEMNET and the LEP to inspire the next generation of engineers.

All of the winners had a fantastic evening; they were awarded trophies and certificates and enjoyed a three-course meal. They also got the opportunity to meet other award winners and were invited to view some of the exhibitions at the museum.

Mark Griffiths, Principal Traffic Control at Transport for London was one of the LEP STEM Ambassadors who won an award on the evening.  “My invite to the academy awards dinner was a real honour.  The night was attended by the who’s who of the engineering world - those who have contributed hugely to the discipline.  My nomination for the ‘Young Engineer of the Year’ award was a shock and receiving the award in front of HRH The Prince Phillip Duke of Edinburgh made the moment very memorable. I hope the award serves as encouragement for other young engineers to strive to achieve highly within the industry”.

The awards were well-earned; all of the winners have been involved in various events and projects with the LEP and STEMNET and have worked hard to engage the young people they have worked with in engineering.
